What will I do with an 8'x4' Painting? Before the winning bidder can receive the painting, the silk panel will need to be steamed and washed. Steaming the silk painting, locks the dyes into the fibers. The whole painting then becomes light fast and washable. The process of steaming takes about three hours per panel and tends to intensify the colors. After steaming the silk painting will be hand washed, dryed in a dryer, and ironed at high heat. The result is an 8'x4' panel of silk with intense colors and a sensuous feel. Framing? A painting of this size can be framed like an art quilt - where a loop of fabric is sewn to the top and bottom of the panel. The painting is hung by a rod through the loop at the top and a second rod through the loop at the bottom to maintain tension. Another method uses a lightweight wood frame with a groove cut into it. The painting can be held in the frame by tensioning it into the groove using a thick cord. Either of these methods can be used to frame a panel of this size for under $100. The artist recommends both of these methods because they let the painting retain its textile nature. Silk paintings can also be framed under glass (much like a watercolor painting) but framing a large piece like these panels is not recommended because it is very expensive, very heavy, and very fragile. One advantage of the silk painting, it is a textile and it is easy to cut the painting into smaller more easily framed pieces. (Don't worry, the artist won't feel bad). To frame a silk painting, it is gently tensioned over a piece of acid free white matboard. The painting is then set into the frame, with some space between the painting and the glass so there is no buildup of moisture. Museum glass is recommended because it protects against UV light, minimizes reflections, and lets the silk colors pop. These silk paintings are 100% silk and the dyes are steamset. The large panel of silk can be used to create wearable art. In fact hand dyed silk is used in many haute couture garments. These panels can be washed and ironed, the dyes are fast, and the whole painting can be easily be folded and tucked away in a drawer for the future. Lee Zimmerman and Lizzards Art Gallery are very experienced and are willing to answer any questions and help with framing ideas. |
